DAY 13: The Last Book You Read

A Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell

Actually, I'm still reading it and I'm on the last few pages. The setting of the story is in an island called Dejima in Nagasaki Japan during the late 1700. Dajima is the province of the Dutch East Indies Co., and its stone bridge over a tidal moat piddle the only gateway between samurai-ruled Japan and the outside world. Jacob de Zoet is the main character in this story who arrived in this island as a young boy and worked as a bookkeeper for 5 years hoping he can have enough money to marry his rich fiancee back in Amsterdam. The story revolves around him and how he fell inlove with a young Japanese woman with disfigured face due to accident with hot oil.

I can't say this can be one of my favorite books but I find it very very interesting. The 1700 trading between Japanese and their Dutch counterpart, spies, sailors, slaves, prostitutes, etc. gave this book a unbelievable twist and thrill.
