SALT

Homer has called it a divine substance and Plato describes it as especially dear to the gods.
Salt has shaped civilizations from the beginning.
Wars have been fought over salt.
Salt taxes secured empires across Europe and Asia.
They have inspired revolutions such as Gandhi's salt march in 1930.

Salt - A World History -Mark Kurlansky

For me, salt has always been just an ingredient used with food and on occasion, as a healing mineral. It never dawned on me how vast it's history was and how important this mineral is until I read this book by M. Kurlansky.
