The Wave
Standing 10.5 metres high and costing £500,000 (!) this is the iconic new sculpture by artist Lucy Glendinning in St. John's Square,Blackpool.
The Wave captures the spirit and energy of the historic seaside town and features an illuminated colour changing pattern in cast resin, taken from the patterns in the architectural detailing in the Winter Gardens and the elegant stained glass windows in St Johns Church and also linking in with Blackpool's long standing Illuminations heritage.
A transparent blue coloured figure 'dives' from the main polished stainless steel structure which references Blackpool's coastal resort status. The highly polished mirror finish provides a 'hall of mirrors' effect, ensuring the onlooker looks different in their reflection.
The shape and mirror finish also makes the 'Wave' look different from every angle. Around the base are clear blue pebble shaped seats which illuminate in the evenings.
