The Hubba Hubba Revue
One of the local San Franciscans recommended to us a burlesque show. I really had no idea what a modern day burlesque show was all about, if it existed or if it was just a code name for a sad and dirty strip club. The one we attended was a real old school burlesque show, and it was attended by all kinds of people, men and women, old and young, with uber style, and with no style, and for 10 bucks at the door, was one of the more entertaining shows I've been to.
My favorite number was "Fat Camp", in which a 8 or so very large women adorned with "Fat Camp" shirts danced with an overly energetic skinny camp counselor, until ... the music changes, they start stomping, and surround the poor skinny camp counselor. She is brought behind a partition and when they emerge, the campers are gnawing on bloody body parts, and licking their fingers. They dance and strip, and what you're left with is 8 or so very fat, near naked women on stage dancing in choreograph without inhibition, as the cheering crowd reached a fever pitch of delight. There was a definite energy between the audience and the performers, and it was clear that the wrong crowd on the wrong night would mean a ... different kind of show. This was not a strip club, it was just plain 'ol fashioned, low-tech fun, a throw-back to old school theatre, and a celebration of the body of all shapes and all sizes.
Pictured here is one of the two MCs for the second of three acts of the show.
