so this is the upshot of having the gas fire tested and cleaned. the gas fitter fixed the wee problem we had then did a smoke test. smoke billows back into the room and he says 'jeez you're very luckythis could've killed you'. that'll explain the chronic headaches i got every time the fire was on last winter. phew. now the big job of getting a chimney survey and possibly a new fire.
