Streets within walls #1 - Black Boy Yard
Well this is my first official entry of Newcastle's old alleys and stairways. First one is Black Boy Yard which runs behind Perdu and The Blackie Boy.
Black Boy Yard has links to Be-Ro flour. Originally known as Bells Royal Flour, Thomas Bell, a grocer from Longhorsley had to re-name his self raising flour after the death of Edward VII as it became illegal to use the royal name.
He started again in his own right in small premises in the yard of the Black Boy Hotel adjoining the Groat Market in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. As well as manufacturing baking powder and self-raising flour he produced a health salt which he later discontinued. He also packed and marketed dried fruit, cereals, tea and coffee using such names as T.B. Royalty, Black Diamond and Belsun. He registered the Be-Ro name under the trade marks act of 1905.
Not sure whether I'll find such interesting links to other streets but I guess I'll find out!
