Corstorphine Doocot
We were in town getting Maddy back today. We'd had a nice long lie and leisurely breakfast then met up with Alex, Chloe and Maddy in the town centre.
After a quick trip to Waitrose we intended to head to the skate park. Unfortunately the traffic was murder round there so we never made it.
We did get a quick stop at the Doocot for a blip though. The Doocot was built in the late sixteenth century to serve the fourteenth century Corstorphine castle. Apparently meat shortages in the 17th century meant land owners were obliged to keep doocots for food. Pigeon stealing was considered quite a heinous crime at the time. The ridges on the structure were to prevent rats getting in and eating the pigeons.
The Doocot is the last remaining trace of teh castle and grounds.
