Royal Presidio Chapel

San Carlos Cathedral also known as Royal Presidio Chapel is the oldest continually operating house of worship in the entire state of California. The plaque near the steeple is dated 1794. It is the original Spanish Royal Presidio of Monterey. On June 3, 1770, an expedition led by Captain Gaspar de Portola and Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo and the Presidio of Monterey.

Great history is everywhere in Monterey, once the capital of California. It is with heavy heart we leave at the end of the 53rd Jazz Festival, but will return next year to be rejuvenated by wonderful jazz and great camaraderie.
