Gulls

Taken before the sun appeared with my Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera. I'm looking to upgrade my camera. Any thoughts on the the Nikon D80? I'm also looking to take an intro photo course but none seem to be available in the area. Can anyone recommend any good books or online sources? Should I purchase photo shop?
