River Kennet

After yesterday's River Marden picture, this may turn into a series of river views, to run concurrently with my existing occasional themes which include canals, cats, textures and colours, unusual animals in Wiltshire fields and Autumn.

This also reflects Autumn, of course, with its hawthorn berries. I have just discovered that a profusion of berries does not signify a hard winter, contrary to popular myth. They do not prophecy anything but are instead the product of favourable conditions in Spring.

The Kennet is another minor local river. One of its sources is Swallowhead Spring, nearby to Silbury Hill, but it also collects water from several tributaries from the north of Avebury near Uffcott and Broad Hinton that emerge at Swallowhead Springs.

It is a tributary of the Thames, joining it near Reading. Most of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its extensive range of rare plants and animals that are unique to chalk watercourses.

Unusually for a river view, this view does not feature any water. I was standing in the river bed at East Kennett, a mile or two east of Swallowhead Springs, as it regularly dries out during the summer and autumn months
