Medlar
Not much left in the garden now but the medlars. These are very strange fruit - a cross between a little pear and apple. The interesting thing about them is you have to leave them until they are practically rotten - this is called bletting. They are then very soft and squashy and I'm not sure what you do with them next!! Maybe jam? You can eat them raw but the taste is strange. The tree is very pretty as is the blossom. They were very popular in Elizabethan times and we had one in our garden when we were growing up and now I have planted one here - next to the quince, another very strange but traditional fruit.
Other than that, we are now preparing for a German evening at Jan's! Weibke is making rosti and I have just made apfel crumble - that well known German dish!
