Roger
Roger is the cockerel in our friends Laura and Carl's community garden in Cleveland.
He is slowly finding his feet. He has a flock brood of 27 hens to look after. And since none of the community gardeners want to eat anything but the eggs, and therefore aren't fussed about Roger siring any new chicks, there's a modicum of pressure on him to do his job well to justify all the dawn crowing.
Today was his day. A fearsome-looking hawk was eying the girls. Roger was alert to the threat, though, and at his clucking, the hens made for the relative shelter of the tall plants. After a couple of swoops, the bird of prey called it a day.
