Bloor St West relfected in the Michael Lee Chin Crystal, which is a very impressive modern extension to the Royal Ontario Museum.
I went to the ROM to see the Terracotta Army exhibition. It was very informative, though they were studious in not commenting one whether the soldiers they were exhibiting were original or replicas - except for one, the archer, which was described as original in the notice on a painted replica of it.
I was struck by the reflective and self-critical curatorial approach: at several points we were invited to question the reliability of a source and then shown evidence which supported it.
But it did go off-piste occasionally. For example, there were some lovely 5th century BC brass mirrors. Now I am quite interested in mirrors and how much of our understanding of reflections is cultural, so I was surprised to read that the original Chinese brass mirrors of 2000 BC were probably 'inspired' by reflections in a 'round basin filled with water'. Apart from being wild speculation, it is a dubious hermeneutic approach which assumes that the creation of a practical artefact like a mirror needs an 'inspiration'.
