Perpignan Day 2, Laid back
So, there we were , no idea of what our alternatives were to get around the Spanish Strike. Thanks be for the internet in situations in like this. A bit of checking and we found Eurolines. who looked like our answer to a prayer. There was also ALSA, which looked like a long-distance version of the Patton Flyer we knew from home. So off we went to the tourist office in Perpignan to look for advice. They sent us back to the Eurolines office, where we fortunately caught them before they closed for lunch and booked a ticket for a bus/coach to Barcelona tomorrow (we thought maybe they wouldn't be affected by the strike, but they were, and services weren't running today).
After that it was back to the railway station to talk to the French about our railway tickets. They were brilliant. It may've been to do with the type of ticket we'd booked, but the bottom line was that they made no hassle at all about giving us a refund for our rail way tickets. Then it was a question of sorting out the hotel. The place we'd stayed in last night wanted to put us into a more expensive room (half as much again), but we managed to find a much better deal just up the road, picked up our bags, and checked in to the new place.
With all that sorted, we did a bit of a tourist thing and made our way to the Palace pf the King of Majorca. which is one of the nigh attractions of Perpignan. As usual by this stage, the weather was utterly glorious, and we had a ball for an hour and a half or so around the palace, which is perched on a height commanding views over Perpignan in all directions. It was good to do the tourist thing for a bit, secure in the knowledge that we'd sorted things out for getting to Barcelona/Sitges, even if that was going to be almost twenty four hours later than planned.
Afterwards, we made our way into the centre of Perpignan, bought some gorgeous pastries and sat and ate them beside the Municipal Theatre in the Place de la Republique, sitting against a wall which acted like a normal storage heater and made a wonderful place to sit and be. Pastries successfully eaten, a nice leisurely stop at a brasserie close by brought a good day to a perfect end.
Food was okay tonight. Not up to last night's Catalan standards, but quite acceptable. One drink near the Theatre Square brought a good day to an end.
