Sunrise October 5th
Another beautiful but brief sunrise this morning. The sun rose straight into a bank of cloud, emerged teasingly and dived with a pinkish grin into another bank where it remained in hiding until there was no point calling it a rising sun any longer. Just managed to fire off a few shots during its brief appearance.
This was shot at the harbour in Arklow. The silhouetted fishing trawler has an unfortunate history. She is called the "Maggie B" and sank off the south coast in early 2006, remaining a long time on the sea bed before being salvaged. The skipper and one of the other two crew members were lost and the only survivor, a Polish sailor told the inquiry that she took on water into the engine room, listed to starboard and sank within two minutes.
To make matters worse another trawler from the same general area, "The Pere Charles" was lost with all hands a short while after, for reasons which were never ascertained. Both wrecks were transported to Arklow where the "Pere Charles" has since been scrapped. "The Maggie B" remains, a ghostly reminder of the dangers facing those who put fish on our plates. She hasn't been scrapped yet as there are court issues pending still.
