Celebrations

The 5th of October is Republic Day in Portugal, an holiday that celebrates the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic.

Today was a special celebration, though, as it marked the centenary of the republican coup d'état that, on October 5, 1910, forced King Manuel II into exile in London.

Although there's a small monarchist movement in the country, most people (myself included) think of this day as a very important step for our nation. Even if democracy has it's failings, people should always be able to influence the decision of who rules the country, right?
