Parrot Waxcap (Hygrocybe psittacina)
This common fungus gets its name from the fact that it changes colour with age and can, sometimes, exhibit many different colours.
In this shot you can see various stages of its life. In the grass, in front of the middle taller fungus, can be seen its early stage. At this stage the cap of the fungus is greenish and slimy then it turns yellowish with a pinkish tinge to it.
Its cap turns up at the edges to reveal broadly spaced gills. The right hand fungus shows the gill pattern and the greenish tinge at the apex of the stem which can continue into the very late stages of the fungus.
Some books give this as an edible fungus while others warn against eating it. In one book I read this "eating more than about a dozen of these can lead to severe intestinal disorders. DON'T EAT IT!
Altogether a very attractive fungus!
