View across the Haupt-Markt, Nuremberg

- Backblip - Nuremberg : Day 1

Taken from a first floor café veranda.

Our first day, getting to know this fascinating city. Much of Nuremberg was destroyed in allied bombings during WW2. Some buildings were saved, particularly the facades. There is a striking contrast of the old and new everywhere. Buildings are brightly painted, and the red roof tiles dominate the skyline. Most of the old city area is pedestrianised, so quiet and safe to walk around. The Haupt-Markt square has a daily market, and nearer Christmas time, the famous Christkindlesmarkt.

To the right you can see the upper half of the Schöner Brunnen, the Beautiful Fountain. Protection was built around it during the war and it survived intact. It has become the main meeting point in the city.

Worth a look in large to see more detail.
