The R101 disaster

This is in a really good exhibition at the Bedford Gallery called R100 and the R101: Airships at Cardington. This is a silver tea tray presented to the crew of the R101 in February 1930, and was retrieved from the site where it crashed in October that year, at Beauvais in France. The damage of the fire that engulfed the airship is clearly visible on the tray, a vivid illustration of the horrific tragedy it must have been.

NB photography is allowed in the exhibition as long as you don't use a flash.
