A Delivery of Wood and Kindness
In preparation for winter, we had some firewood delivered today. Our next-door neighbor, upon hearing the truck dump the wood on our driveway, spontaneously came over with a pair of gloves and offered to help move it into place. Grateful, I took her up on the offer, and she and I had the whole half cord of wood moved and stacked behind our garage within about an hour. Perhaps she was feeling extra generous because it was the Lord's Day (a literal interpretation of love your neighbor and all that), or perhaps that's just the sort of person she is -- either way, it was a very kind gesture and I appreciated the help.
Lots of things about home-ownership make me feel like a proper adult, and having a big stack of wood in my backyard is definitely one. There's something that just feels right about knowing that I have the power to create heat to warm my family without having to rely on some electric or gas company. Next time, to feel even more like an adult, perhaps I'll try splitting the wood myself.
