Coba Mayan Village tour

This was the first day we went out and about.

We took a trip to the Coba Mayan village ruins which was pretty fantastic. Amazing to realise that the Mayans had built cities over a century ago and now, until the last 30 years they had been living in shacks and huts in the forest. The founding of the tourist trade in the area has brought the Mayans back to the sides of the roads, building first their shacks and then their houses making money through trade of handcrafted goods and through working within tourism.

This temple here is the highest pyramid in the area - higher even than Chichin Itza although Chichin Itza is one of the wonders of the world due to being better maintained but now it is not open to people to climb. Here at Coba we could and did climb to the top and the view was so stunning - took our breath away and was more than worth the climb.

Following this we went to visit with a coba mayan family, saw their newly built house, the shack they orginally had on the site and watched the ladies hand cook corn tortilla.

There was a little boy of about 3 who was practising his skills cutting into a fallen banana tree branch with his machete while his mother looked on. Several of us were kinda awestruck - can you imagine the outrage in the UK if a kid plays with a blunt eating knife let alone a machete!

The last stop on the trip was at a sink hole, cenote, where we swam in a naturally formed lagoon/ river which at one point would have been below ground. It was very pretty and a nice way to cool down after a busy day in the blazing Mexican son!
