london blip #1: sunflower seeds

sooooo many photos I wanted to blip today! this is the first of my london blips and this is by far the most impressive thing we saw today: Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds. this is the turbine hall of the tate modern and at first glance it looks like it's filled with pebbles - but when you get closer you realise that it's actually sunflower seeds. on even closer inspection it transpires that the sunflower seeds are made of porcelain and each one has been hand painted by artists in china - there are over a hundred million of them in the hall! amazing! part of the concept of the installation is the fact that such time, care and a huge amount of work has gone into producing each seed, yet the public are walking through them and kids are playing in them like they're on a pebbly beach. the dust that was coming from them being handled filled the hall - the whole thing was great. I loved the fact that so many people had contributed towards this then it was transported to london and the fact that each one looked exactly like a sunflower seed. I also love that this photo reminds me of a lowry painting with matchstick figures in an industrial setting.
I wanted to blip the seeds themselves too, but that's the thing about blip, you can't have it all and I wanted to show the scale of this more than anything. brilliant...looking forward to blipping more london tomorrow!
