Reflections of a cute mallard duckling

Lovely little mallard duckling swimming on the pond in Hagley Park Christchurch. There seem to be quite a few ducklings about, but within 100 yards of the duck pond we saw a large rat, and two very large eels, so they are at risk.

Luckily the river doesn't seem to be too polluted through the park, unlike further down the river where raw sewerage is seeping into the river from pipes broken during the earthquake. Where the river is polluted I've noticed that the survival of new ducklings appears to be compromised - e.g. a clutch of 7 paradise ducklings is down to 1 after a week.
