Hiking on Ranier

I searched across the plain
For the dips and dives
Of honeybee hives
Agog with a gummy sugar and shadow.
I walked in search of satori
Over a mountain full of fir,
While the soft light dancing on the needles
Reminded me of splintered glass.

I left the mountain like a friend.
I waved at its peak and blew a kiss
Through the glass of the car window.
I relaxed as my parents drove
Through the plain scenery
Of highway lights and medians,
Of shopping malls and pedestrians.
I held my fingers up to my nose
And breathed a memento
Of wet leaves and sap
In the shadow of a friend.
