Kinkaku-Ji, The Temple Of The Golden Pavillion
Formally known as Rokuon-ji (Deer Garden Temple).
Bought from Saionjis by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and transformed into the Kinkaku-ji complex in 1397.
Survived intact until July 2, 1950, at 2:30 am, when it was burned down by a monk named Hayashi Yoken, who then attempted seppuku on the Daimon-ji hill behind the building. It was the inspiration and focus for Yukio Mishima's 1956 book ' The Temple of the Golden Pavilion'.
It was just as beautiful as I had hoped.
