I don't think they walked backwards infront of the horses back in the olden days when this was the only way to plough a field. But this was a competition, and there was a prize to be won for the best, straightest, neatest furrows.

This was at Beamish Museum, where they were also holding a dry-stone-walling competition. We got in for free as "guests of the council". Our tickets said we were competitors, but luckily, we didn't have to masquarade as experts in any ancient, rural arts.

That was probably just as well.
