First dent in the log pile

I never realised (until I came to live in this house in which condensation freezes on the inside of the windows) the extent to which wood would become such an important part of daily winter existence.
Here it is discussed endlessly - the quality, the age, the best woods from which it should be cut, the most reliable wood farmers and those who will fob you off with a 'pile de paille', the length of time that should lapse between the wood being lumbered and being burned, the relative merits of oak over ash, the price of a 'stere'.....
They say that wood warms you three times - once when you cut it, again when you stack it and finally when you burn it. I can attest to the last two.
