The Yorkshire Wolds
Miles of roads and hedged fields with a stand of trees every now and then. The Yorkshire Wolds hides it treasures well.
Behind the hedges there is a completely different landscape. A prehistoric landscape.
Earthworks abound that represent land divisions and places of burial. A lot of the burial mounds were excavated at the end of the 1800s and they have since been ploughed flat leaving only a shadow of their former selves that is visible only on aerial photographs.
Some of the mounds escaped excavation, notably the ones that had trees growing on them. They exist to this day.
This image is from the western edge of the Wolds with the Vale of York in the background.
