Remember the Battle of Corrichie...

I regularly pass by this commemorative stone on my way between my offices in Banchory and Inverurie.

Set a few metres back from the road on the north side of the B977 between the B977-B9125 junction at Birchmoss and the turn off to the Mill of Hirn, it commemorates the Battle of Corriechie on 28th October 1562.

Nowadays, it's highly visible to traffic passing along this busy route used as a fast and convenient 'rat run' between Banchory and Aberdeen. However, until the forest surrounding it was felled some 2-3 years ago, it could only be glimpsed momentarily between the trees, if one remembered to glance sharply to the left or right (as appropriate) as one passed its minuscule layby beside the road. Indeed, I reckon I must have passed it dozens of times before being quite shocked one day to discover its existence!
