Queen and Knight from the Lewis Chess Set
Museum replicas of two of the 93 walrus tusk gaming pieces found on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides between 1780 and 1831. There is good evidence to suggest that they were made in on Trondheim, Norway, around AD 1150-1200.
Beyond that, little is known for sure ~ except that they're delightful, wonderful little works that were valued and enjoyed a thousand years ago, perhaps by some of our own ancestors, certainly by members of their broader communities. They are, therefore, a kind of link through time of mutuality...
I find the Queen's dismay in the face of the conflict around her especially moving.
