Crocus speciosus

Happy Halloween! I was worried these guys were not going to come up from an early fall planting. It has been very dry and I only watered them in once or twice after planting. Anyhow there was no sign of them yesterday and this morning about 10 had poped up.

Many people are surprised to find crocus that bloom in the fall. Many crocus are native around the Mediterranean which has long hot summers followed by mild moister autumns. Fall, winter and spring are the time to be active and growing. Many natives of Mediterranean climates ( The Mediterranean basin, California, Chile, South Africa, and Western Australia) are summer dormant.

Crocus speciosus in often starts the crocus season here in Colorado. In mild years it can strecth from Sept to almost May, with only a break during the coldest part of Jan.
