SOUTHERN BLACK BACKED YEARLING
This bird is pretty common - but the interesting thing about it is - its a yearling.
They come through their first moult being quite dark in colour until this yearling phase ( lightening up) then they go into their adult plumage in the late
second/ third year. - very black on the back & white underneath & very hard to photograph in the air as the white gets burnt out very easily -
an overcast day is best to photograph any white feathered bird but you dont get the nice blue sky that holiday-makers enjoy and it cant wait for Blipping Blip!
thanks everyone for your comments on yesterdays flying Tern shot.
quite amazing really - blippers do like birds perhaps other than Horrigan??
