Carotenoids revealed . . .
Hmmm.
Chlorophyll, responsible for green pigmentation in leaves, slows and then stops in the autumn, revealing xanthophylls (yellow pigments), carotenoids (orange) and anthrocyanins (red) which were all present but masked by the chlorophyll.
And I thought the lovely colors where simply due to cool weather or frost.
Anyway... another leaf. But this one seemed to scream at me as I walked by and demanded I take its picture.
So, I obliged...
Enjoy!
