Thanksgiving dinner, anyone?

Six or eight wild turkeys were pecking around in the leaf litter this morning. I had to leave the path and go after them among the trees to capture this blip, but they didn't seem to be too wary of my presence. A few deer were mingling with them, and they were more skittish than the turkeys. Turkeys can fly of course, but they seem to do more walking and running than flying. If alarmed, they take off like they are running a 5K, occasionally taking wing for short distances, but mostly running or trotting. Maybe that's where the phrase "turkey trot" came from. The only time I've seen them fly any distance is at night when they fly up into the very tall trees to roost for the night. They are not very graceful when they fly, but they get where they want to go.
