Roman in the rain
A Roman soldier stands guard at the Porta Nigra in Trier, Germany. I was going to crop the man in the hoodie but decided to leave him in the picture for a touch of irony. Trier is the oldest city in Germany, founded around 16 B.C. The Porta Nigra, an enormous Roman city gate, is one of its landmarks. Karl Marx was born in this city in 1818.
T and I drove to Trier today to meet up with my dear friend Ute whom I haven't seen since we were in high school together in the Philippines. She's an environmentalist in Alaska and was visiting family in Saarbrücken. It was terrific to see her and her mum Gisela after 33 years and we had a lovely afternoon together.
