Wings over Harrison
The west side of Manhattan, I have learned tonight, had a highway from about 1930 to 1973 that is different than the one we know today. The highway was completely elevated and in 1973, a truck, on its way to issue some repairs to it, fell through it. So they closed it. For good. It took about 15 years for them to fully take it down.
Eagle-like insignias, like the one here, were used at the time to mark all cross streets along the highway. Perhaps I'll keep my eyes open for more of them now that I know how prevalent they were. Pier 23 demarcated here is no longer in existence.
