Paradise and Gell

Paradise and Gell, is a rather old fashioned furniture shop in Peel. I don't think I have ever bought anything from them, but, in a fairly deserted (main) shopping street they must be doing something right as they have been there a long time. It is I believe run by Mr Paradise and Mr Gell, and I expect when they retire, the shop will go with them (correct me if you know better). So, I took this photo because it won't be there for ever, because it is such an impressive, huge shop, with intricate architecture, all of which seems quite out of place in a street of generally much smaller and tattier buildings, and because the shop front is original and unusal for that, and because the name Paradise and Gell is just so wonderful :)

I have an interest in making records of things like this, which, whilst not terribly interesting now, will become valuable social history in 20, 50, 100 years time. I have an idea for a much bigger project, which so far has not progressed beyond an idea.

As I blipped so early yesterday I didn't actually say anything about what happened. With it being a weekend, and my roofers do not work at weekends, it was of course a glorious day. I headed out to the hills in the car with bag packed with running clothes and a map. Parking at Eary Cushlin I planned my route whilst listening to Desert Island Disks (soooo Radio 4; should it not be Desert Island Downoads by now?). I planned a beautiful route along the Bayr Ny Skeddan footpath to Glen Maye and then back along the Raad Ny Foillan coastal path taking in Niarbyl, a beach with a waterfall whose name I forget, and continued along to Eary Cushlin with its tortuous climb of around 200m in 1km (which I mainly did not run).

I was tired and mooched for much of the afternoon. I'd been invited out to dinner and had another half hour to spare and I sloped off to bed with Stephen Fry (ibook) and promptly fell asleep. Late for dinner. That was totally predictable so not sure why I did it.

Today, back to work (for me), but again the weather had turned for the worse again, and no sign of the roofers. I have stayed on another week so they could finish; not looking good :(
