One veteran passes on tips to some keen up-and-comers. And that's just part of the story.
Tonight I went to a screening of a film my partner, Lindsay, helped make about St Hilda's East, an historic community centre in east London. As well as editing the final film, she provided support and tuition to some local teenagers who shot all the footage. Some of the young directors, cameramen and interviewers are seen here, listening to John Hall.
John made a film about St Hilda's himself in 1957. The lack of any kind of budget meant he had to be really resourceful. This extended as far as tapping up connections at the BBC for the remnants of film so they had something to shoot on.
And now, more than half a century later, the surviving footage shot on those bits of reclaimed film have been revived again, woven together with these lads' modern-day material to make a new, up-to-date retelling of St Hilda's 120-year story.
Recycling, waste not, want not, it all adds up to the same thing: passing stuff on.
