LEMMI-IN
A crush of wet tourists and colliding umbrellas didn't stop the thousands who had come to see the Medieval city of Siena, in the Tuscan area of Italy.
We squelched through puddles that had settled into the half century old cobbled pavements, and watched the blue dye from our spanish sandals leak into our feet.
Looking up at the vast and substantial reddish brick buildings that formed the massive centre courtyard of the town, sent mascara running down faces, and rain trickling into jacket collars.
None of this mattered!
The grandeur and history that surrounded the multi-national crowd was more than enough to help us withstand a good soaking.
However: how did those Renaissance builders manage to construct such magnificent structures that have endured wars and hundreds of years.....when today we constantly need to repair our modern highways, and demolish much that is less than several decades old?
