Their English is much better than my Arabic!

A wonderful sign in the car park at the ruins of the ancient city of Mari located on the banks of the Euphrates in the north-eastern corner of modern Syria. Mari, founded around 2900 BC, was built of mud-bricks but has yielded a huge number of artifacts, most notably some 20,000 clay tablets with cuneiform inscriptions giving an insight into the commercial, religious and public life of the city.
