Team player?
At the University we have an annual event called the BUAFTAs - I won't bore you with the meaning of the acronym, but it aims to recognise staff who have made a special effort or done something impactful in the year. Today I opened two envelopes, titled 'Personal', which usually means it's from HR, so there's a slight frisson of agony as you wonder whether they've found out about the time you nearly set the Grade II listed building on fire by accident.* So, imagine my surprise when I found out I'd been nominated for two awards - "Team Player of the Year' and 'Reflecting the University's Values'.
What's this got to do with the picture, you may wonder. Well, a few weeks ago I offered my colleagues knitting classes, as so many have asked to be taught, and today was my first class. Here are two knitters (one experienced, one not) and in between, a non-learner doing an invaluable job of untangling wool. I don't know if teaching people to knit makes me a team player, but I'm pleased nonetheless that someone, somewhere thinks so.
Am hoping some men will join, if only to break the stereotype, but it seems unlikely.
* Just kidding. I think. Well, it was all ok in the end anyway.
