The Edge of the Wold

Limestone pavement, Hutton Roof

This is a view from the limestone pavements of Hutton Roof Crags, northward to Holme Park Fell with its tilted beds of limestone. This is the southern end of Cumbria, east of the M6. These limestone hills rise to about 900 feet and dominate the eastern skyline as you drive north toward Kendal and the Lake District.

It was late afternoon as the sun was sinking, and the hazel scrub was glowing with savannah colours in the strong low light.

I have only blipped limestone pavement once before, that at the more low level Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve. In that blip I gave an explanation of the origin and ecology of these unusual landforms.

I have put several other photographs of the Hutton Roof limestone pavements on Flickr.
