Making a run for it

One of the larger sets of waves that had the kayak going A over apex, for a rather damp end to the day:

I thought I'd timed it right for a flat spot to get back to the beach, but with 100yds to go a big dark wall started building behind. Decision time - sprint for the beach and surf the white water or back paddle and let the wave pass underneath? Got it completely wrong - backpaddled, started slipping back over the wave, then it launched me, kayak and assorted fishing rods into thin air. Kayak upside down and everything swilling around in the backwash, thankfully the bits claimed by the sea weren't too expensive...

Guess it's a reasonable trade off for the two biggest bass I've ever caught. :)
