Chocolate Sinterklaas
Next to pepernoten chocolate figures and letters are also typical for the Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) feast that is celebrated on 5 December.
Saint Nicholas was a bishop in present-day Turkey and he becames the patron saint of children and sailors. The celebrations around his person originated in the Middle Ages.
These figures are actually Sinterklaas himself. As you can see he is wearing the traditional, ceremonial head-dress of bishops.
