Bow Tie
This is the monument in remembrance of the great fire in 1862 in Enschede. Behind it is the Grote Kerk.
Because the medieval city was largely built of wood and stone houses were the exception, fire was a constant risk and a series of fires in 1517, 1750 and again on May 7, 1862 earned the people from Enschede the nickname Brandstichters (arsonists). Most of the city was burned or damaged because of the 1862 fire, only a few buildings were saved (from the Visit Enschede website).
Pity about the grey sky.
