House Sparrow
The common House Sparrow ... or as it is now ... not the not so common House Sparrow.
An incredible 90% decline in numbers in urban areas since the mid 1970's.
No one really knows why this is. Global warming? Modern farming techniques? Climate change? Predation by corvids, birds of prey, or squirrels?
All have been blamed, but not one gives a definitive proof.
The Independent Newspaper offered a £5000 reward for a scientific reason for the huge decline in the house sparrow. Ten years on it has still not been claimed, despite massive amount of research into the subject.
One thing is for certain, the world will be a duller place without one of mankind's longest standing friends from the animal kingdom.
