today's delivery (#2)
So, over the weekend we learned that one of our hens (Betty) is broody. Today, after some sterling interweb research Mrs BH located a smallholding not a million miles away from home that has fertilised eggs for sale (as well as point of lay hens, special breeds and all other sorts of hen-ness). We rang them up and drove over to pick up half a dozen fertilised eggs from them. We don't know what breed the eggs are - could be any combination of any of the hens they've got - you could call it pot luck.
And, in a stroke of genius, we have been advised to mark the eggs before we put them in the nest box, so we don't accidentally collect the eggs that are meant to be hatched. Which is why these 6 eggs have a rather fetching stripe around them - that way Mrs BH and I will be able to identify them as 'not laid here' and therefore deserving of collection, rather than 'for hatching'.
We've swapped them for today's layings - no doubt more blips will follow, should any of these little potential hen-lets hatch.
