Pelicanguy

sign of the season

You know it's late autumn when young turkey tails (tramenetes versicolor) appear. These fungi are polypores -- their spores are released from small pores on their undersides. They are also saphropitic, meaning they obtain energy that is stored in dead plant material - wood in this case - and help it decompose. And you can see why they are called turkey tails!
