Who are you and why are you in our field?
We did sneak past, the dog and I, taking a short cut home after a very wet walk, across the private pasture of this indignant little flock.
Living in the sheltered grounds of a small country estate these plump ewes enjoy a privileged lifestyle and are kept mainly as pets and landscape accessories, often with extra fodder supplied to them as they graze. They are lowland sheep, not the hardy native breeds of Wales: those with white faces look like Southdowns while the blackfaces are the Suffolk type.
'The mountain sheep are sweeter
But the valley sheep are fatter,
We therefore deemed it meeter
To carry off the latter.'
But no, don't worry, WE prefer a joint of tasty upland lamb on our table!
