Kitchen sink drama
At the same moment that Hewson was trying to come to terms with his new world order, Sarah realised she'd drifted back in the kitchen again.
She tried to remember what she'd been about to do. Make yet another cup of tea? Load the dishwasher? Unload the dishwasher? Whatever it was, she couldn't bring it to mind.
She found herself staring aimlessly at the sink. The waiting and worrying seemed to make everything pointless.
Sarah smiled for a moment, thinking back to school, when the three of them - her, Nick and Adam - had been a little gang. An odd bunch they'd been, but they'd all enjoyed being in each other's company so much, it was them against the world...
And these days of course, Adam and Nick never spoke. Of course there were loads of people from school she'd lost touch with, but this seemed different. Thinking about Adam brought the situation back to her again, and she sank once more into despondency.
If only they knew what was going on, she thought.
She literally jumped at the sound of the phone. Nick must have been sitting over it, because it didn't get through its second ring before he'd picked it up. The conversation was brief, and she couldn't really make out Nick's words. Intrigued, she started towards the sitting room, where Nick was taking the call - just as he emerged form the doorway.
"Get your coat love," he said. "We've got a job to do."
